Global and Regional Assessments of Critical Mineral and Metal Mining and Biodiversity Measurement, Recovery, and Restoration
With advancements in technology occurring at a rapid pace and an increase in production of renewable energies, there is a growing demand for critical mineral and metal mining. Whilst the move towards more renewable energies serves to reduce our dependence on carbon-intensive fossil fuels, critical mineral mining comes with its own environmental challenges.
This project assesses the prospective implications for critical mineral and metal mining on biodiversity at a global and regional levels. It will identify existing research gaps with regards to how the impacts of mining on biodiversity are currently assessed and will compare the quality of existing global datasets of mining footprints. The project will involve collaboration with corporate partners to identify their capacity for promoting biodiversity recovery and develops robust measurement solutions with implications for biodiversity recovery and restoration.
